Korean Cloud Creams Offer Lightweight Hydration for Oily
A new wave of Korean moisturizers, known as cloud creams, uses whipped textures and barrier-supporting ingredients to deliver hydration without heaviness

Korean skincare's latest trend is the cloud cream, a lightweight moisturizer designed to hydrate deeply while leaving a soft, blurred finish. These formulas are ideal for oily skin types as they are not overly shiny and feature a breathable texture.
Holistic facialist Mina Lee states the trend reflects a move toward intelligent hydration. "Rather than relying on heavy occlusives to seal moisture in, these formulations focus on strengthening the skin barrier while maintaining breathability," she says.
How Cloud Creams Differ from Traditional Moisturizers
Traditional moisturizers often use richer ingredients like petrolatum or dense butters to create a protective film. Cloud creams, however, are emulsified to produce a whipped, aerated texture. Aesthetic physician Dr. Hany Abi Ghosn explains that heavier creams work by reducing water loss through occlusion, while cloud creams prioritize biomimetic lipids and lightweight emollients.
This difference allows cloud creams to integrate more seamlessly into the skin. Ghosn notes this preserves the skin's permeability, which is important when using active ingredients or undergoing treatments like LED therapy.
Key Ingredients in Cloud Cream Formulas
From a formulation perspective, these creams focus on barrier-supporting lipids and soothing humectants. Key ingredients include ceramides, panthenol, skin-identical lipids, cholesterol, and fatty acids.
Lee cites Neal’s Yard Remedies' Oat And Ceramide Barrier Repair Cream as a good example, combining ceramides with oat extract to calm inflammation while reinforcing the skin's outer layer. The result is skin that feels cushioned and resilient with a velvety, blurred finish rather than overt shine.
The Appeal of Cloud Skin
The goal of cloud creams is not the high shine of glass skin but a softly diffused, plumped appearance. This finish suggests optimal hydration and barrier balance. The cool, bouncy texture of these moisturizers makes them an effortless update on heavier products, appealing to those seeking hydration without a greasy feel.
The trend emphasizes strengthening the skin barrier with intelligent formulations. It prioritizes a fluffy, whipped gel texture that provides nourishment without weight. This approach caters to a desire for products that support skin health while delivering a specific, natural aesthetic.
